LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Southern College volleyball will play 14 home matches this fall at Streamline Sale Arena at Jenkins Field House as second-year head coach Chris Keen released his squad's 2019 schedule on Monday morning.
The Mocs will host the annual Terrace Hotel Classic from Sept. 6-7 and participate in the GSC/SSC South Region Crossover in Birmingham, Ala. in October. Keen will look to build on the success of his first year at the helm where he guided the Moccasins to a 22-11 record and their ninth-straight NCAA South Regional appearance.
Florida Southern opens the season against juggernaut Concordia-St. Paul (Sept. 6) in the first matchup between the two since the 2017 NCAA Championship before taking on Hillsdale later that evening. The Mocs will close out the event with two matches on Sept. 7 against Indiana (Pa.) and Central Missouri. Three of FSC's opponents (Concordia-St. Paul, Hillsdale, Central Missouri) made regional tournaments last year and had a combined 74-24 record.
Southern will then hit the road for three matches at the USC Aiken Invite against USC Aiken (Sept. 13), Lander (Sept. 14) and Lee (Sept. 14). The Mocs will kick off SSC competition with two road matches at Saint Leo (Sept. 20) and Eckerd (Sept. 21) before the conference home opener against Embry-Riddle (Sept. 27) at 7 p.m.
Florida Southern will play a slew of conference matches before heading to the GSC/SSC Crossover from Oct. 18-19 in Birmingham, Ala. for three matches against GSC foes. The opponents for the crossover will be announced later in the season.
Key conference home matches include 2018 national champion Tampa (Nov. 5) as well as a string of three matches in five days against Barry (Oct. 25), Palm Beach Atlantic (Oct. 26) and Saint Leo (Oct. 29).The NCAA South Regional Tournament is slated to be played from Dec. 5-7, with the NCAA Division II Championships taking place Dec. 12-14 in Denver, Colo.
In all, the Moccasins will face at least nine teams that participated in last year's NCAA Tournament (Barry, Central Missouri, Concordia-St. Paul, Hillsdale, Lander, Palm Beach Atlantic, Saint Leo, Tampa, USC Aiken), including national champion Tampa and four other teams that finished last year ranked in the AVCA Coaches Poll (No. 6 Concordia-St. Paul, No. 13 Palm Beach Atlantic, No. 15 Central Missouri and No. 19 Barry).
Eight of this year's opponents won at least 20 matches in 2018, and the South Region Crossover will also present a tough test as the GSC produced four 20-win teams last year.
