Volleyball Earns Two Academic All-District Honors

GREENWOOD, IN - On the same day that as their first match of the NCAA South Regional, Florida Southern College volleyball standouts Bethany Besancenez and Nicole Mattson were named as Google Cloud Academic all-District selections by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday afternoon.

The Academic all-District team recognizes student-athletes for their excellence in the classroom and on the court. Besancenez, a business major with a 3.69 grade-point average, leads the Moccasins and ranks 17th nationally in total assists (1,262) and is 24th in the country in assists per set (11.07). She ranks second in school history in career assists (5,212) and seventh in digs (1,364). Besancenez is a three-time SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll member and was a third team AVCA all-American a year ago.

Mattson, who was named as the SSC and D2CCA South Region Player of the Year earlier in the week, earned her first Academic all-District honors thanks to a 3.72 GPA as a double major in computer science and mathematics. She leads the nation in total attacks (1,628), is fourth in total kills (521), and is sixth in kills per set (4.61). A first team all-America selection last year, Mattson is also a three-time SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll member, and ranks fourth in program history in kills (1,643) and ninth in digs (1,293).

Florida Southern will face No. 21 West Florida in the opening round of play at the NCAA South Regional in West Palm Beach. The winner will face either No. 1 seed Palm Beach Atlantic or No. 8 seed Spring Hill in the regional semifinals on Friday.
