MELBOURNE, FL - Florida Southern College volleyball standout Nicole Mattson has been named as the Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the SSC office announced on Monday afternoon. Mattson's award is her second of the season and the fifth of her career.
Last week, the senior outside hitter averaged 4.89 kills per set and hit .283 on the attack as the Moccasins went 2-1 in conference action last week. After a slow start that saw her tally just eight kills in a win over Saint Leo, Mattson exploded to 20 kills and a 3.83 attack percentage in a loss to No. 8 Tampa and followed that with 16 kills in a sweep of Rollins on Saturday. In addition, she also added 39 digs (4.33/s), three blocks, and one ace to her line for the week.
Her 20 kills against Tampa marked the eighth time this season that she has eclipsed 20 kills, and marked the highest kill total in a three-set match in the SSC this season. Her efforts against Saint Leo helped the Mocs push their home win streak to 26-straight contests dating back to last year.
Mattson has now recorded 1,452 kills in her career, good for sixth in Florida Southern history, and is just 44 shy of moving into fifth place in the program's record books. She enters this week as the SSC leader in points (5.25), kills (4.80), and attacks (14.96) per set, and is in the top five nationally in all three categories.
Florida Southern will face Eckerd on the road on Tuesday before hosting Lynn (Oct. 12) and Barry (Oct. 13) over the weekend. The Moccasins are in Orlando next weekend for the South Region Crossover, where they will face three opponents from the Gulf South Conference. The matchups for the Crossover will be determined early next week.
