Women's Tennis Blanks West Chester, 9-0, For Fourth Straight Win

LAKELAND - Florida Southern posted its first 9-0 win of the season here Thursday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center, blanking West Chester, 9-0, for the Moccasins fourth straight win. The victory pushes the 15th-ranked Moccasins to 7-3 on the season while the Golden Rams fall to 2-5.

Carolyn Cureton and Lola Asis got the match rolling for Florida Southern with an 8-1 win over Julia Mowrey and Sofia Von Der Heyde at number three doubles while Lorena Rionda and Natalija Popovic topped Leandra Roelker and Elaina Rochford, 8-3, at number two. Nina Schwab and Magda Stepnik completed the doubles sweep for the Mocs with an 8-3 victory at number one.

The Moccasins only gave up 10 points over the six singles matches with five sets ending in 6-0 Moccasin wins and four others being just 6-1.

Selin Devrimci picked up an easy 6-0, 6-0 win at number one singles over Roelker while Popovic duplicated the feat with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at number three over Nixon to clinch the team victory. Stepnik kept it rolling with a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Mowrey at number five while Asis dispatched Rochford, 6-1, 6-2 at number four. Rionda shut off Power, 6-1, 6-2 at number one Schwab topped Von Der Heyde, 6-1, 6-0 at number six to complete the shutout.

Florida Southern will take a 2-1 conference into a 10 a.m. home Sunshine State Conference match on Saturday against Nova Southeastern.
