LAKELAND -The 15th-ranked Florida Southern women's tennis team topped visiting North Georgia, 6-3, here Tuesday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The win, the Moccasins's third straight improves the team to 6-3 on the year while the Nighthawks dropped to 7-3.
The Moccasins swept the three doubles matches, starting with an 8-3 victory by Lorena Rionda and Natalija Popovic over Emma Etelalahti and Judita Barrios at number three. Sasha Nionova and Selin Devrimci then disposed of Holly Bennett and Vaishali Jorge, 8-4, at number one and Nina Schwab and Magda Stepnik edged Adrienne Bofinger and Lexa Loden, 8-6, at number three.
In singles, North Georgia picked up its first win of the match as Adrienne Bofinger downed Rionda, 6-1, 6-0 at number one, but Lola Asis got the point back for the Moccasins with a 6-0, 6-1 win at number five over Loden. Holly Bennett kept the Nighthawks in the match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Popovic at number two. Devrimci then clinched the win for Florida Southern when she defeated Jorge, 6-2, 7-5 at number three.
Stepnik fell, 0-6, 6-2, 10-5 to Cibeles Zuddy at number five, but Avery Hunter picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at number six for the Mocs over Laura Van Der Hage.
Florida Southern will return to action on Thursday, March 15 at 3 p.m. against West Chester at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
