LAKELAND – Florida Southern posted a 6-3 win over visiting Flagler here Tuesday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The 15th-ranked Moccasins improve to 3-2 with the victory while the Saints drop to 4-5.
Lola Asis and Natalija Popovic got things rolling for Florida Southern with an 8-3 win over Paloma Martinez and Anika Nissen at number three doubles. However, Flagler came back at number two as Camila Ramazzini and Felicitas Runkel topped Nina Schwab and Magda Stepnik, 8-6. Sasha Nionova and Lorena Rionda closed out doubles with an 8-6 win over Lizanne Jinkertz and Alessandra Traub at number one.
In singles, Popovic downed Ramazzini, 6-3, 6-2, at number three while Rionda disposed of Runkel, 6-2, 6-1, at number two as the Moccasins grabbed a 4-1 lead. Stepnik then clinched the win for Florida Southern with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Nissen at number five. Sofia Vagaja picked up Flagler's second win with a 6-3, 6-7, 10-4 decision over Schwab at number six while Traub battled past Asis, 6-4, 4-6, 18-16, at number four. Nionova, ranked 13th in the nation, rallied after dropping her first set 4-6, to come back with wins of 7-6 and 10-2 to beat 25th-ranked Jinkertz at number one.
Florida Southern will travel to Hilton Head, SC for a 9 a.m. match, Saturday against Newberry.
