LAKELAND - Florida Southern, ranked 25th in the NCAA Division II national ranking, swept West Virginia State, 9-0, here Friday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The shutout was the Moccasins' third 9-0 victory in their last six matches and lifts the team to a 8-3 record.
Lorena Rionda and Magda Stepnik got the ball rolling for Florida Southern with an 8-0 win over Lindsay Goff and Kayla McKnight at number three while Linnea Skymberg and Natalija Popovic posted an identical 8-0 win over Nina Dillwald and Marta Yevstakhevych at number two. Sasha Nionova and Selin Devrimci, ranked 10th in the South Region, made it a clean sweep for the Moccasins with an 9-8 victory over Laura Isbey and Kiersten Hensley at number one.
Lola Asis keep the Moccasin express rolling with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the ball rolling for Florida Southern with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Goff at number five while Popvic posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory in her match versus Yevstakhevych at number four, to clinch the for the Moccasins.
Skymberg recorded a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Isbey at number one while Devrimci won out, 0-6, 6-0 6-0, going against Dillwald sat number three. Rionda picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win at number two over Hensley while Averry Hunter defeated McKnight at number six to complete the sweep.
Florida Southern takes on No. 3 Barry on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
