LAKELAND - Florida Southern swept doubles and took five of the six singles matches to post an 8-1 win over visiting Arkansas Tech here Wednesday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The 22nd-ranked Moccasins improve to 7-3 on the season while the Golden Suns fall to 9-4.
The Moccasins' number one doubles duo of Sasha Nionova and Selin Devrimci, which is ranked 10th in the South Region ranking, defeated Tamara Bell and Teresa Sanchez by an 8-1 score, for a sixth straight win.
Linnea Skymberg and Natalija Popovic, playing at number two, also won by an 8-1 tally over Kami Ward and Haeleigh Long while Lorena Rionda and Magda Stepnik topped Vandella Suico and Maria Vlaskina, 8-4, at number three to improve to 9-1 on the season.
Lola Asis notched Florida Southern's first win in singles, posting a 6-1, 6-4 victory at number four over Arkansas Tech's Long. Stepnik then downed Vlaskina, 6-2, 6-2 to seal the win for Florida Southern.
Popovic defeated Ward, 6-3, 6-1, at number three singles for her seventh consecutive win. Devrimci kept the wins coming for Florida Southern, posting a 6-3, 6-1 victory at number two over Sanchez. Avery Hunter downed Suico, 7-5, 6-4 at number five for the Moccasins final victory.
At number one, Arkansas Tech's Bell downed Rionda, 6-4, 7-6 for the Golden Suns' only win in the match.
Florida Southern continues its month-long home stand by hosting West Virginia State on Friday at 3 p.m. at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
