MELBOURNE, FL - Florida Southern opened Sunshine State Conference play here Friday with a 6-3 win over Florida Tech on the FIT Campus Courts. The Moccasins improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the SSC while The Panthers fall to 2-2 and 1-2 in the league.
The Moccasins swept through the three doubles matches and split the six singles pairings for their first victory of the season.
In doubles, Lorena Rionda and Magda Stepnik teamed to defeat Erin Egoroff and Paloma Vela, 8-3 at number three while Sasha Nionova and Selin Devrimci downed Alahna Reto and Kayla Hergott, 8-4 at number one. Linnea Skymberg and Natalija Popovic topped Mariana Castaneiras and Meritt Rabson, 8-6, to complete the sweep.
Nionova opened singles play with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Reto at number one singles while Rionda clinched the FSC triumph with a 6-4 win over Maria Chun at number four singles.
Florida Tech took the next two singles matches as Egoroff defeated Devrimci at number three and K Hergott won out, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, over Skymberg at number two.
Popovic picked up the Mocs' final point with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Vela at number five while Lola Asis fell to the Panthers' Castraneiras, 2-6, 6-1, 10-4 at number five.
Florida Southern will travel to St. Petersburg to face Eckerd at 3 p.m. in a make-up match of the Feb. 15 postponed meeting.
