VALDOSTA, GA – Florida Southern battled West Florida for four and a half hours, but in the end, it was the 7th-ranked Argonauts emerging with a 6-3 win over the 33rd-ranked Moccasins here on the campus of Valdosta State University. It was the second match in a row for the Moccasins that has gone 4:30 or more.
The Moccasins (0-2) took a 2-1 lead at the end of doubles as Lorena Rionda and Magda Stepnik grabbed an 8-4 decision over Valeria Mantilla and Samantha Echevarria at number three and Linnea Skymberg and Natalija Popovic topped Jordana Lujan and Diana Vlad, 8-6, at number two. West Florida (2-0) got its only doubles win at number one where Paula Lopes and Paula Coyos defeated Sasha Nionova and Selin Devrimci. 8-6.
In singles, Mantilla downed Lola Asis, 6-3 at number six to tie the match at 2-all. The Argonauts took a 3-2 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win at number two by Lujan over Devrimci and increased the lead to 4-2 as Coyos got by Skymberg, 6-4, 6-3 at number two.
Florida Southern cut the lead to 3-2 when Nionova defeated Lopes, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (8-6) at number one singles. However, Heather Mixon gave the win to West Florida with a 7-6 (6), 6-4 triumph over Popovic at number five. Vlad closed the match with a 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3 victory over over Rionda at number four for the final 6-3 margin.
Florida Southern will play again Saturday at 1 p.m. here against Valdosta State.
