Rionda and Stepnik Reach Doubles Finals; Hunter and Nionova Makes Singles Semis at Mercer Gridiron Classic

MERCER, GA - The Florida Southern doubles team of Lorena Rionda and Magda Stepnik will play for the championship of the Seahawks Division of the Mercer Gridiron Classic on Sunday here at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center while Sasha Nionova and Avery Hunter will play in the semifinals of their respective singles divisions.

Rionda and Stepnik defeated Mercer's Christie Cesarino and Haley Powell by a 6-3 score to advance to Sunday's championship match of the Seahawks Division against Juliane Curcio and Gabriella Lackova of Alabama State. On the consolation side of the division, Avery Hunter and Katie Stanford dropped a 6-4 decision to Anna Sovic and Andrea Peteu of Mercer in the semifinals.

In the Dolphins Doubles Division, Sasha Nionova and Selin Devrimci picked up a win over Marine Cartier and Brankica Orlovic of Alabama State to move on the consolation bracket championship match Sunday against Yannick Garcia and Shelby Ashley of Middle Georgia State.

In singles play in the Bills Division, Nionova opened play with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Preeti Gokhale of Middle Georgia State and then topped Anatasia Grosheva, 6-2, 3-6, 10-5. Nionova will face Katia Stavroulaki of Mercer in Sunday's semifinals. Also in the Bills Division, Rionda lost her first round match to Katie Sidor of Mercer and then fell, 6-4, 6-3, to Bridget Harding of Emory in the consolation semifinals.

In the Cowboys Division, Hunted started play with a 6-2, 6-2, victory over Jovana Parlic of Alabama State and then dispatched Elizabeth Clayton of Florida A&M, 6-2, 6-3, to move into the semifinals where she will face Haley Powell of Mercer on Sunday.

In the Falcons Division, Devrimci lost her opening match to Nathalie Wenko of Middle Georgia State and then got a bye into Sunday's consolation bracket semifinals against Lili Pastore of Savannah State.

In the 49ers Division, Stepnik posted a 6-1, 6-4 opening round win over Garcia of MGSU, but fell, 7-6 (3), 6-4, to Elaine Vernoff of Emory in the quarterfinals. Katie Stanford lost her first round match to FAMU's Sophia Osabuohien and then got a bye into Sunday's consolation semifinals against Rachida Kateb of Savannah State.
