LAKELAND - Lorena Rionda and Linnea Skymberg advanced undefeated through two rounds of the USTA/ITA South Region Championships held here Friday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. In addition, Rionda and Sasha Nionova won their first round doubles match as did Skymberg and Selin Devrimci.
Skymberg opened with a 6-1, 6-3, win over West Alabama's Georgina Morral and then defeated Valdosta State's Daniella Barta, 6-2, 6-0, to move on in the winner's bracket to face Barry's Daria Salnikova at 10 a.m. Saturday. Rionda notched a 6-0, 6-1, win over Florida Tech's Maria Escude, before defeating Valdosta State's Sabrina Schmidt, 7-6 (5), 6-1, to advance to face Lynn's Grace Mpassy Saturday at 10 a.m.
In the doubles, Nionova and Rionda topped Eckerd's Emily Fridrik and Joyce Fields, 8-1, and will now play Auburn-Montgomery's Alejandra Gil and Iris Vereij Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Devrimci and Skymberg received a first round bye and will play AUM's Anna Rudolfova and Kelly Southwood Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
Nionova posted a 6-1, 6-1, win over Auburn-Montgomery's Iris Verweij in singles and then fell, 6-3, 6-4 to Lynn's Tereza Hejlova in the second round. Devrimci recorded a 6-4, 6-1 opening round win over Rollin's Savanna Fuller, but was toppled 6-1, 6-1, by West Alabama's Amina Mukhametshina in round two.
Magda Stepnik was defeated 6-2, 4-6, 10-8, by Palm Beach Atlantic's Taylor Conti in the opening round of singles but came back to defeat Rollin's Zoe Monge, 6-0, 6-3 in the consolation first round. Stepnik will play Eckerd's Isabella Wong Saturday at 10 a.m.
