LAKELAND – Florida Southern, ranked 40th in the NCAA Division II, wrapped up the home portion of its 2016 regular season with a 6-3 upset over #31 Embry-Riddle here Monday at the Warden Tennis Center.
The Moccasins, now 11-8, will conclude the regular season with a 2 p.m. match Wednesday, April 20, at Rollins College. Embry-Riddle drops to 9-9 on the season.
Florida Southern won all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Sasha Nionova and Lorena Rionda posted a 8-2 win at number two over Paula Ortiz Couder and Kathryn Beck, while Linnea Skymberg and Selin Devrimci defeated Hui-I Huang and Anna Gotz, 8-5, at number one. FSC's Miroslava Mensikova and Natalija Popovic completed the sweep at number three with a 8-5 victory over Giovanna Tomiotto and Meena Bennet.
Popovic put the Moccasins within one point of the match win with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Tomiotto at number four singles while Devrimci sealed the Florida Southern win by defeating Couder, 6-2, 7-6, at number three singles.
Bock downed FSC's Carolyn Cureton, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 at number five while Skymberg defeated Huang, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at number one singles. Gotz got by Rionda, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 at number two while Bennett recorded a 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 win at number six over FSC's Katie Stanford.
