LAKELAND – Florida Southern breezed to a 9-0 sweep of visiting Eckerd College in a Sunshine State Conference match here Saturday at the Warden Tennis Center. With the win, the 40th ranked Moccasins improve to 10-8 on the season and 3-4 in the SSC while the Tritons fall to 2-17 and 0-8 in the league.
The Moccasins won the doubles competition by allowing just five points to the Tritons. The sweep began with FSC's number two doubles team of Lorena Rionda and Sasha Nionova blanking EC's Laurence Bourgault and Isabella Wong, 8-0, while the Moccasin duo of Miroslava Mensikova and Nina Vucevic downed Madeline Carlson and Gabrielle Hartman, 8-2, at number three. Florida Southern's Linnea Skymberg and Selin Devrimci completed the doubles domination with an 8-0 victory at number one over Emily Fridrik and MaryAnn Aaron.
In singles, Natalija Popovic picked up Florida Southern's first point with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Bourgault at number three, while Devrimci sealed the Moccasins victory by defeating Aaron, 6-0, 6-2, at number two singles.
Katie Stanford then recorded a 6-1, 6-0 FSC win at number five singles over Carlson while Carolyn Cureton defeated Wong, 6-3, 6-0 at number four. Rionda downed Fridik, 6-1, 6-2, at number one while Cassie Eldredge preserved the shutout with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Hartman at number six.
Florida Southern will host Embry-Riddle on Monday, April 18, at 2 p.m. at the Warden Tennis Center for final home match of the 2016 campaign, before closing out the regular season at Rollins on Wednesday, April 20, at 4 p.m.
The Moccasins will then compete in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament April 28-30 at the University of Tampa.
