LAKELAND – Florida Southern fell to Augustana (S.D.) by a 7-2 score here Wednesday at the Warden Tennis Center. The Moccasins, 7-5, were playing their first match as the nation's number 40 ranked team in the Oracle/ITA Division II Women's Collegiate Tennis Poll while the 48th-ranked Vikings, who came into the match having won their last three matches by 9-0 scores, won their seventh straight match to improve to 15-1.
The Moccasins hung tough with the Vikings in the doubles competition. After Augustana's Meredith Lawrence and Kaitlyn Motley topped Florida Southern's Cassie Eldredge and Katie Stanford, 8-4, at number three, the Mocs duo of Sasha Nionova and Linnea Skymberg had taken a 5-4 lead at number one doubles before falling 8-5 to Kornel Staniszewska and Jessa Richards, which are ranked seventh nationally.
The number two doubles match was much of the same as FSC's team of Selin Devrimci and Lorenda Rionda staked a 6-5 lead, before Syndey Postal and Berkley Darr came back for a 8-4 victory.
Florida Southern's two points came in singles as Rionda topped Postal, 6-3, 6-0 at number three to pick up her sixth consecutive win and her 10th in her last 11 matches, and Carolyn Cureton defeated Darr, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 at number four.
At number one singles, 10th-ranked Staniszewska downed the Mocccasins' Skymberg by a 6-0, 6-0 score while Richards prevailed 6-2, 2-6, 10-3 over FSC's Devrimci at number two. Christine Olivo posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Eldredge at number five and Lawrence posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at number six over FSC's Katie Stanford.
Florida Southern hits the road and returns to Sunshine State Conference action on Tuesday, March 29, at No. 34 Rollins for a 4 p.m. match.
