LAKELAND – Turns out that the third time is indeed a charm. After falling in their first two matches of the season, Florida Southern notched victory number one with a 9-0 blanking of visiting Seton Hill her Monday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
Florida Southern (1-2) swept the double competition with only the number two doubles being a close score. The Moccasins picked up their first win of the match as the number three team of Natalija Popovic and Carolyn Cureton breezed to an 8-0 win over the team of Alisha Torretti and Mary Baich of Seton Hill (3-4). The number one team of Linnea Skymberg and Selin Devrimci had a similar east match, posting an 8-1 win over Paula Carvajalino and Madison DeBone.
In singles, Florida Southern dropped just one set in the six matches. At Rionda disposed of Carvajalino quickly with a 6-0, 6-1 win while Shannon Griffin clinched the Moccasins first win with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Baich at number six singles.
The lone contested match came at number two singles as Devrimci rallied back after dropping the first set to Ruiz, 4-6, before coming back to post wins over 6-3 and 10-3 for the victory. At number one singles, Skymberg won, 6-2, 6-3 over Knezevic while Popovic recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win over DeBone at number four and Eldredge beat Torretti, 6-3, 6-2.
Florida Southern plays Chestnut Hill at home Tuesday at 4 pm before hitting the road for a three-game road trip to Texas, beginning with a March 4 match at St. Edwards in Austin. The Mocs will then play two matches in San Antonio, facing St. Mary's on March 5 and Texas A&M Kingsville on March 6.
