DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Florida Southern opened the 2017-18 season with a second-place finish at the Lady Falcon Invitational hosted by Daytona State. It was the Moccasins' best season-opening performance since they won the same tournament in 2011. The Mocs went on to finish that year as national runner-up.
All five Florida Southern players in the regular lineup scored in the 70s on Sunday, with Tori Higgins again leading the Moccasins. The junior shot a two-over par 74, giving her a 147 (+3) in the tournament. Sophomore Victoria Cangero shot a 75, freshman Ashley Zagers had a 76, junior Madison Wetzel turned in a 77, and sophomore Amanda Gartrell added 79. That gave Florida Southern a team score of 302 in the second round, and a 607 in the tournament. That score equaled their best ever at the Lady Falcon Invitational, an event they've played each of the last nine years. They also had a 607 as runner-up in 2010, and won the tournament with a 608 in 2011.
Higgins' 147 was the Mocs' best score overall, followed by a 153 from Gartrell and Zagers, a 158 from Wetzel, and a 160 from Cangero. Results from the Mocs' three golfers playing as individuals were unavailable as of Sunday night, and full results will be posted when available.
