Water Ski Tops Rollins in Season Opener

GROVELAND, FL - The Florida Southern College water ski teams kicked off the 2016 season with a victory over in-state rival Rollins on Saturday at Sunset Lakes. The Moccasin men finished 610 points, while the women scored 680 to lead Florida Southern to a 1,290-810 win over the Tars, who scored 450 points on the men's side and 360 on the women's.

The Moccasin women swept the slalom, trick, and jump competitions, while the men won the slalom and jump competitions to earn the victory over Rollins. Elli Horton paced Florida Southern by finishing as the top overall women's skier with victories in the jumps and tricks and Cole McCormick was the top male skier, finishing first in the slalom, second in the tricks and third in the jumps.

Horton tallied a score of 190 points, earning 90 in the tricks and 60 in the jumps. Her scored of 3,390 in the tricks was more than 400 points better than Chantal Singer of Rollins, who scored 2,910 points. Horton's jump of 122 feet placed her well ahead of teammate Nicola Horwood, who came in second in the jumps at 107 feet.

In fact, Florida Southern trounced Rollins in the jumps, taking the top five spots to finish with a 180-10 advantage in the category. The FSC women edged the Tars in the tricks, 230-210, and earned a 270-140 victory in the slalom, where Allie Nicholson finished first (3.0 buoys at 38 feet off).

On the men's side, McCormick won the slalom with 3.0 buoys and 41 feet off for a score of 117 points. Brett Walker, Ryan Harris and Dylan Smith finished second, third and fourth in the slalom, respectively. McCormick, the only Moccasin to participate in the ticks, took second with a score of 3,580. He also finished third in the jumps with a mark of 133 feet.

David Fulp finished second in the jumps for the Mocs with a mark of 148 feet, while Harris and Walker both jumped 131 feet to finish in a fourth-place tie. Walker and Harris also finished second and third in the slalom, while Smith came in fourth.

Florida Southern returns to action at the end of the month when they head to Greenwood, SC to participate in the NCWSA East Regional at Rodgers Farm Lake on Sept. 24.
