SAINT LEO – Alana Tabel pitched a rain-shortened 1-hit shutout for #9 Saint Leo, which was held to just two hits by Florida Southern freshman Jessica Trana but still scored five runs for a 5-0 win. The game was called in the bottom of the fifth inning, and with more rain moving through the area later in the afternoon, the second game of the scheduled doubleheader was moved to Sunday.

The Lions (25-1, 10-1 Sunshine State Conference) scored their first two runs after back-to-back walks started the bottom of the first inning. Cleanup batter Ciera Schumaker knocked in the first one with a single and the second one scored on an error as Schumaker stole second.

Another leadoff walk in the second inning came around to score on an error that put Saint Leo up 3-0, and it turned into a 4-0 game in the third inning when Samantha Ohmie was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Lions tacked on another run in the fourth when Rachael Heath walked, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and came home on a wild pitch.

Tabel ran her record to 10-0 as the senior allowed only a third-inning single to junior Beri Scott and a first-inning walk to junior Erica Morrissey. She struck out eight in pitching her SSC-leading sixth shutout of the season.

Trana (now 0-3) pitched four innings for the Moccasins (10-19-1, 3-7-1) and gave up only two hits and two earned runs, but walked five batters while striking out two.

The final game of the series is scheduled to begin Sunday night at 6 p.m.
