HARDEEVILLE, SC - Mason Jones continued his strong sophomore campaign by finishing in third place, leading Florida Southern to a second-place showing at the USC Beaufort Sand Shark Invitational Cross Country meet here Saturday morning at the Sgt. Jasper Park. Jones led all Division II runners in the meet with a time of 25:14.3. The 34-team field featured 281 runners.
Jones has now led the Moccasins in each of the team's five competitions this season.
The Moccasins finished with 82 points, trailing only fellow Sunshine State Conference member, Embry-Riddle, which took top honors with 58 points. Other SSC schools in the meet included Lynn (5th) and Nova Southeastern (11th).
Sophomore Josh Wagner came in 14th with a 26:15.8 time for the Moccasins while senior Dean McGregor placed 15th at 26:16.4. Junior Warran Grajalez was the next Moccasin across the finish line coming in 20th at 26:26.7 while sophomore Mitchell Kozik took 30th place with a 26:42.9 time. Freshman Michael Balseca was next in 53rd place at 27:18.7 while sophomore Brian Martin came in 93rd with a 28:10.5 mark.
Rounding out the Moccasins' contingent were senior Everett Wagner (115th, 28:35.4); freshman Thomas Gardner (144th, 29:19.3); junior Brandon Williams (152nd, 29:26.8); and junior Mikey Papa (221st, 31:22.5).
Balseca, Kozik, Martin, and Papa all posted personal best times in the meet.
The Moccasins will now prepare to defend their SSC Championship at the 2018 Sunshine State Conference Championships which will be contested on Nov. 3 in Daytona Beach, FL. Florida Southern won its 17th league title last season.
