MELBOURNE - Sophomore Mason Jones has been named the first Sunshine State Conference Runner of the Week for 2018. The announcement was made today by the league office.
Jones, the 2017 SSC Freshman of the Year, took first-place honors at the Holloway Park Preseason Festival this past Saturday in Lakeland. The Titusville, Fla. native outdistanced the field of 60 runners with a time of 26:16.98 over the 8K course, winning the race by 51.5 seconds over teammate Josh Wagner who took second place. Jones' time is a meet record.
Jones and Wagner paced the Moccasins to a first-place team finish in the Division II portion with 28 points, just one point more than second place Saint Leo.
It is Jones' first career victory and marks the second straight year a Moccasin runner has taken top honors at the event. Bobby Ormsby won last year's Festival, which was contested over a 5K course.
Florida Southern competes next on Sept. 22 at the Embry-Riddle Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla.
