TAMPA - The Florida Southern men's track team competed in three events here Friday evening at the Ryan McCall Invitational hosted by the University of Tampa and held at Pepin Rood Stadium.
In Friday's meet, the Moccasins competed in the 400-meter, 800-meter, and 5,000-meter races.
The Mocs finished the meet by finishing fourth out of 10 teams as they scored a total of 21 points on the night. Saint Leo won the men's team title with 55 points, while Tampa was third with 23 points.
Junior Evan Quinones (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) provided the Moccasin with their best of the night as he took home first place in the 800-meter run with a school record time of 1:54.53. His time bettered the old mark of 1:58.10 set by current Moccasin head coach Ben Martucci in 2009. Quinones win gave the Mocs 10 points in the event and they would also get an eighth place finish from sophomore John Bryant (Valrico, Fla.) as he ran a time of 2:00.49 to score a point and give the Mocs 11 points in the 800-meter run. Sophomore Jesse Hudson (Buford, Ga.) ran a time of 2:10.54 to finish 21st in the 800-meter run.
Florida Southern would also score 10 points in the 5,000-meter run thanks to fourth, fifth and eighth place finishes respectively by junior Anthony Pollizzi (Fort Myers, Fla.), senior Jose Perez (Haines City, Fla.) and freshman Dean McGregor (Fort Myers, Fla.). Pollizzi finished fourth in the event with a time of 15:14.23, while Perez was fifth with a time of 15:15.96 and McGregor came in eighth place with a time of 15:32.30.
Other competitors in the 5,000-meter run were freshman Casey Brady (Lakeland, Fla.), who finished 16th with a time of 15:59.42, while sophomore Christian Beauchemin (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) was 19th with a time of 16:07.61. Junior Pedro Cuervo (Lakeland, Fla.) was 24th with a time of 16:54.84 and sophomore Oswaldo Zapata (Haines City, Fla.) was 27th with a time of 18:39.13.
Two Mocs also ran in the 400-meter dash on Friday evening as sophomore Josh Sessums (Lakeland, Fla.) posted a time of 54.59 to finish in 12th place and senior Cameron Andrews (Ocala, Fla.) was 16th with a time of 56.27.
The Mocs will return to action on Thursday, March 17 as they make a return trip to Tampa to compete at the USF Bulls Invitational hosted by the University of South Florida.
