TAMPA, Fla. - The Florida Southern men's track team competed in the 800-meter, 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter races at Saturday's Ryan McCall Invitational, hosted by the University of Tampa at Pepin Rood Stadium.
Junior Jose Perez (Haines City, Fla.) provided the Moccasins with their best finish of the day, taking sixth in the 5K. His 15:44.80 was a mere seventh-tenths of a second off of the personal record he set at the University of South Florida's Bulls Invitational on March 19.
Sophomore Cody Van Natter (Spring Hill, Fla.) earned a top-20 finish in the 5K, placing 19th at 16:22.59. Freshman Christian Beauchemin (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), running the event for the third time in his rookie season, came in 32nd place with a time of 17:12.23.
Seniors Andrew Coull (Royersford, Pa.) and Logan Selzer (Wesley Chapel, Fla), and freshman Oswaldo Zapata (Haines City, Fla.) also competed in the 5K. Coull and Selzer finished in 38th and 39th place, respectively, with times of 17:39.77 and 17:52.63. Zapata followed in 41st place at 18:15.54.
In the 800-meter race, freshman John Bryant (Valrico, Fla.) finished in a season-best seventh place in his third try at the event. His time of 2:01.99 was 1.40 seconds slower than the personal record he set on Day 2 of the Bulls Invitational on March 20. Sophomore Alex Sessums (Lakeland, Fla.) was 23-hundredths of a second off of his season-best with a 2:12.91, good enough for 17th place.
Sophomore Pedro Cuervo (Lakeland, Fla.) was the only Moc to run in the 1,500-meter race. He took 17th place with a time of 4:31.49.
The Mocs are scheduled to compete in the University of North Florida's East Region Preview at Hodges Stadium on Friday, May 8, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
