TAMPA, Fla. – Florida Southern senior Kyle Butler led the pack for Florida Southern in the men's 5,000-meter race at kick off the 2015 Bulls Invitational, hosted by the University of South Florida at the USF Track & Field Stadium.
Butler (Melbourne, Fla.) turned in a personal record in the 5K, besting his time from last season's Bulls Invite by nearly eight seconds. He finished in seventh place with a time of 15:31.21.
Junior Jose Perez (Haines City, Fla.) also recorded a personal-record time in his ninth-place finish. His 15:44.10 was 1.20 seconds faster than his season-best from the Florida State Relays last March.
Sophomore Cody Van Natter (Spring Hill, Fla.) and freshman John Bryant (Valrico, Fla.) gave the Moccasins four top-20 finishers in 14th and 19th place, respectively. Van Natter was clocked at 15:57.51 and Bryant at 16.11.89 in his first collegiate 5K.
The Mocs had four other freshmen competing in the 5K for the first time. Christian Beauchemin (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) finished 31st at 16:40.75 and Pedro Cuervo (Lakeland, Fla.) took 38th at 17:47.79. Oswaldo Zapata (Haines City, Fla.) and Patrick Webb (Kingman, Ariz.) rounded out the Mocs win 40th and 42nd place, respectively.
Senior Andrew Coull (Royersford, Pa.) was sandwiched in between the first-year runners in 39th place at 17:52.73.
The Mocs will return to action for Day 2 of the Bulls Invitational tomorrow, Friday, March 20th.
