TAMPA, Fla. - Florida Southern sophomore Robert Ormsby once again led the Moccasin men's track team at Friday's USF Invitational with his second straight victory in the 3,000-meter race.
Ormsby's time may have been slightly over four seconds slower than his school-record performance from the Embry-Riddle Last Chance Meet on Feb. 21, but his 8:32.85 was still good enough for the second-fastest 3K in school history.
The Mocs, who competed in five different events overall, had five other finishers in the 3K. Junior Jose Perez (Haines City, Fla.) and sophomore Cody Van Natter (Spring Hill, Fla.) claimed top-20 finishes in the 3,000-meter race. Perez came in 14th place with a time of 9:09.06 while Van Natter came in 20th at 9:20.39. Junior Zach Hall (Weeki Wachee, Fla.) finished 30th with a time of 9:36.26, while freshmen Christian Beauchemin (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and Oswaldo Zapata (Haines City, Fla.) took 32nd and 47th, respectively.
Senior Kyle Butler (Melbourne, Fla.), who set a school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase while at Florida Atlantic University, took fifth place in the event on Friday with a time of 10:23.43.
Freshman John Bryant competed in two events, highlighted by his 10th-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.03. The Valrico, Fla., native also took 16th in the 1,500-meter race at 4:16.05.
Senior Andrew Coull (Royersford, Pa.) turned in a personal record in the 1,500-meter run. He shaved 14-hundredths of a second of his time from last year's USF Invitational and came in 38th place at 4:32.44.
The Moccasin men's track team will return to the USF Track & Field Stadium in Tampa, Fla. on Thursday, March 19 and Friday, March 20 to compete in the Bulls Invitational.
