Van Emburgh Adds Six Newcomers for 2019-20

LAKELAND, Fla. - Florida Southern College men's tennis head coach Greg Van Emburgh has added six newcomers to the Moccasin squad for the upcoming 2019-20 season. The three transfers and three freshmen will join the team in its third year under Van Emburgh as the program looks to build on a 2018-19 season that saw them upset No. 12 Palm Beach Atlantic and Division-I foe New Jersey Tech.

 "I'm really excited about this year's class," Van Emburgh said. "We have a great mix of homegrown and international experience to add to our deep team."

Boca Prep International/UNC Asheville | Boca Raton, Fla.

Daly comes to the Moccasins after spending his first two seasons at UNC-Asheville. Daly won his first collegiate match on Jan. 21, 2018 against Pedro Pinassi from Mars Hill in the No. 5 singles flight by a score of 6-2, 6-4 and partnered with Finley Ray McFadyen in the same match in the No. 2 doubles flight to win 6-2 over Rodrigo Ramos and Fernando Neto. He attended Boca Prep International in high school and was top fifteen in the state of Florida for 16s and 18s and finished top 50 in the nation in boys 16s doubles rankings. The Floridian was a doubles quarterfinalist in level one clay court national and a two-time winner of level 2 national open titles in boys 16s doubles.

Akademi Bastad Gymnasium/West Alabama | Mölle, Sweden

Nordblom joins the Moccasins after two years with West Alabama. As a freshman he finished the season with an 8-9 record in singles play and earned a 9-1 doubles record with three different partners while aslo receiving a player of the week nod for the GSC (April 18). As a sophomore he finished with a 12-5 singles record and 10-4 doubles record and recorded doubles wins over opponents from No. 2 Columbus State (Feb. 24), No. 4 West Florida (March 3) and No. 18 Georgia College (March 20). His second-year campaign also saw him earn singles wins over opponents from No. 18 Georgia College (March 20), No. 50 Embry-Riddle (March 31) and No. 7 West Florida (May 3) His record while at UWA was  20-14 in singles play and 19-5 in doubles play. Nordblom also helpwed win a team U18 national championship with Bastad tennis club and received No. 12 ranking in Sweden as a junior.

"Erik was one of the top juniors in Sweden. He has experience from his previous institution and knows what it takes to be on a winning team."

Steinershool | Weinheim, Germany

Salamanca joins Van Emburgh's squad after two years at Northwood. While with the Timberwolves he earned numerous honors, including second-team All-Conference, GLIAC Academic Excellence, President's List and the Team GPA Award. He recorded a 12-6 record in singles and a 16-5 record in doubles during his freshman campaign, partnering with Ben Brandherm to defeat Austin DeBruyne and Simon Levy of No. 19 Ferris State, 9-8 with an 8-6 tiebreaker (April 30, 2018). His sophomore season saw him record a 14-3 record in singles and an 8-10 record in doubles during sophomore season. His career records for the Timberwolves include 26-9 in singles play and 24-15 in doubles play.

"Pablo is a very hard worker and will continue to improve in our program. He will help add great depth in our singles and doubles."

Klasika | Riga, Latvia

A graduate of Klasika, Auslands was a LTS Masters 2018 Winner. The Latvian also finished second place at the 2017 U-18 Latvian Junior Championship and achieved position of 1735 for ITF Junior Rankings.

"Janis is going to be a hard worker and a great competitor. He will continue to improve and develop here at Florida Southern."

IMG Academy | Sao Paola, Brazil

A graduate of IMG Academy, Fujiwara achieved the rank of 891 for the ITF while in high school.

George Steinbrenner | Tampa, Fla.
Martin played in the No. 1 flight while at George Steinbrenner High School, where he helped the team earn berths to states in 2017, 2018, and 2019. The Tampa, Fla. native was a FHSAA State Finalist and doubles champion in 2018.
