LAKELAND - Florida Southern men's tennis downed Florida Tech, 7-2, on Saturday in Sunshine State Conference action at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The win lifts the 43rd-ranked Moccasins to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the conference while the Panthers slip to 8-6 and 1-5 in the SSC.
In doubles, FSC's Miguel Alvarez-Hevia and Matt Matsuyama dropped an 8-5 decision to Majed Alshaikh and Aria Canadell Solana at number one. Florida Southern recovered to take the next two pairing as Derek Bell and Tim Becker got by Ricardo Corona and James Finnigan, 8-6, at number two while Blaine Miller and Victor Ahlbeck edged Jack Clark Tjimon Louisy, 9-8 (7-5), at number three.
In singles, Alvarez-Hevia defeated Finnigan, 6-1, 6-4, at number two and FSC's Lennart Vossgaetter topped Alshaikh, 6-4, 6-3, at number five. Becker then clipped Clark, 6-2, 7-6, at number four to clinch the win for Florida Southern.
Ahlbeck knocked off Corona, 6-4, 7-6, at number three while at number one, 61st-ranked Alvaro Arias was outlasted 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 by FIT's Solana, who is ranked 73rd in the NCAA Division II. Finally, Matsuyama rallied to beat Carpinell, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3, at number six.
Florida Southern will open April with a 2 p.m. match at home against Embry-Riddle on Thursday, April 5.
