WINTER PARK, FL - The Florida Southern men's tennis team continued its fall season by competing at the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational here Friday on the Rollins College campus.
In Flight A of doubles, Blaine Miller and Tim Becker were defeated, 9-7, by Vincent Sullerot and James Defusto of Saint Leo University and then lost, 9-7, to Atakan Gezer and Ziad Melhaoui of Rollins. Also in the same flight, Matt Matsuyama and Miguel Alvarez-Hevia received a first-round bye but were defeated, 8-3, by Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz and Nicolo De Fria. The Moccasin duo then posted a 9-8 (4) win over Flagler's Alexander Chepik and Tomasso Bagon to advance to play a to-be-determined opponent Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
In Flight B of doubles, Alvaro Arias and Lennart Vossäetter received a first-round bye but were topped, 8-1, by Daniel Ferl and Luke Horan of Rollins. The FSC team will play next on Saturday at 8 a.m. against Saint Leo's Willem van den Akker and Aurel Ciocanu.
In Flight A of the singles competition, Arias lost, 6-2, 6-4 to De Fria of Rollins and will play Flagler's Rasmus Jonnson at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
In Flight B, Alvarez-Hevia fell, 6-1, 6-1 to Flagler's Chepik and will now play Mehaoui of Rollins Saturday at 2 p.m. In addition, Becker was defeated, 6-4, 6-4, by Gezer of Rollins and will play Saturday at 2 p.m. against Victor Appelqvist of Eckerd College.
In Flight C, Matsuyama lost, 6-3, 6-2 to Ferl of Rollins and will face Saint Leo's Francisco Aparacio at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
In Flight D, Vossgäetter dropped a 6-2, 6-3 match to van den Akker of Saint Leo and will face Eckerd's Alasdair Knox Saturday at 2 p.m.
In Flight E, Miller posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Eckerd's Robert Vazquez and will advance in the winner's bracket Saturday at 2 p.m. against Rollin's Eric Scarlett.
