FSC Doubles Teams Take One Runner-Up, Three Fifth Place Finishes at FIT Invitational

MELBOURNE - The Florida Southern men's tennis team got its Fall portion of the 2016-17 underway with doubles competition in the Panther Tennis Invitational here Friday. The Moccasins had one runner-up finish and three fifth-place finishes in the three flights.

In Flight 1, FSC's duo of Fabian Lundberg and Miguel Alvarez-Hevia were defeated 8-3 in their opening set by JJ Clark and Tjimon Louisy of the host FIT Panthers. Lundberg and Alvarez-Hevia rebounded with an 8-4 victory over Victor Appelquist and Matt Spasic of Eckerd College before taking fifth place honors with a 9-8(3) win over Philipp Hoffmann and Rafael Lenz of Palm Beach Atlantic.

In Flight 2, the Moccasin team of Oscar Soderlund and Derek Bell captured their opening round win with an 8-5 decision over Austin Causey and Silviu Solomon of FIT. The duo then beat Gerard Carpinell and James Flanagan of FIT before falling 8-1 in the championship match to PBAU's Thomas Salmon and Pietro DeSilva. Also in Flight 2, Blaine Miller and Matt Matsuyama dropped their opening match, 8-5, to Jesus Amezcua and Samir Chikahoui of Eastern Florida State College. The FSC pair came back to take a 8-3 win over Andrew Scott and Marco Rivera of Webber, before capturing fifth place with an 8-6 win over Eddie Lewis and Will Stone of Eckerd.

In Flight 3, FSC's Mark Bucknam and Lance Francisco were defeated, 8-4, in their opening round match by Bernardo Ferreira and Carlos Niemyer of Palm Beach Atlantic. The FSC duo then posted a 9-7 win over Cameron Sanson and Lee Schmidt of Florida Tech before taking fifth place when Bruno Alves and Rob Vazquez defaulted. 

Action in the FIT Invitational continues Saturday with Singles competition getting underway at 11 a.m. Lundberg will take on PBAU's Lenz in Flight 1, while Alvarez-Hevia plays FIT's Rickey Corona in Flight 2. In Flight 3, Soderlund faces FIT's Louisy while in Flight 4, Bell plays FIT's Solomon and Matsuyama battles Maximiliano Faundez of Eastern Florida State College. In Flght 5, it's Miller playing FIT's Kleanthis Zisis. Finally in Flight 6, Bucknam plays Webber's Gustavo Fortunato and Franciso faces FIT's Austin Causey.

Singles Flights 1-4 will be contested at the Desoto Tennis Center while Flights 5-6 will be held at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club.
