TALLAHASSEE – Winning three of the eight events held and placing second in two others, Florida Southern concluded a 2-day meet at Florida State with five additional NCAA provisional qualifying times.

Florida State, which is ranked #22 in NCAA Division I, defeated Florida Southern 205-110, but it was a productive weekend for the Moccasins overall. On Friday, they achieved NCAA "B" times in five different events and had the same number on Saturday with seniors Raul Garrastazu, Edson Lima, and Jesus Marin, and junior Marco Palacios doing it as individuals, and the 400-medley relay team doing it as well.

Lima and Palacios were the big winners for Florida Southern, as each won an individual race before swimming the final two legs for the victorious 200-freestyle relay team. Lima got his win in the 100-butterfly with an NCAA "B" time of 48.50 seconds to put him ahead of three Seminoles who were second, third and fourth in that event. Palacios then won the 100-backstroke in a "B" time of 49.13 seconds, a race that also saw junior Diego Gimenez finish third and miss a "B" time by only four one-hundredths of a second.

Oddly enough, the winning 200-freestyle relay team that featured Gimenez, Marin, Lima, and Palacios also fell 0.04 seconds short of an NCAA "B" time, though they did beat Florida State's top team by 0.03 seconds.

In addition to victories in the 100-butterfly, 100-backstroke and 200-freestyle relay, Florida Southern also got runner-up finishes from Garrastazu and freshman Sean Kim. Garrastazu was second in the 1,000-freestyle with an NCAA "B" time of 9:24.76, which was less than one second behind Florida State's Calvin Bryant. Kim was second in the 100-breaststroke where the Moccasins had four of the top six swimmers.

On top of their provisional qualifying times in the 1,000-freestyle (Garrastazu), 100-butterfly (Lima), 100-freestyle (Marin), and 100-backstroke (Palacios), the Moccasins had an additional "B" time from their 400-medley relay team of Palacios (back), Lima (fly), Marin (free), and sophomore Luis Jasso (breast).

Florida Southern will be off from competition until December 18, when the Moccasins begin the 3-day Winter Invitational in Clearwater.
