Florida Southern junior midfielder Christoph Gums picked up two more academic awards Monday after the United Soccer Coaches announced their Scholar All-Region and All-America Teams. Gums was first-team selection for the Scholar All-South Region Team and a third-team honoree on the All-America squad.
Gums, who owns a 3.73 GPA while majoring in marketing, was previously named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team and has also won three other postseason awards to date. He was previously voted to two different all-region teams for his play on the field as well as the All-Sunshine State Conference First Team. The Moccasins' leading scorer tallied 18 points on five goals and eight assists this season, giving him 34 points in his two years at Florida Southern after transferring from Manhattan College. That's the most for any midfielder in the SSC over the last two seasons. His 16 career assists are tied for ninth in team history, leaving him eight short of the school record going into his senior year. Gums has had eight assists in each of his two seasons with the Moccasins, tying for second in the SSC in that category this year after tying for the league lead as a sophomore.
Gums is the first Moccasin since Pete Schiebel in 2002 to win All-SSC, All-South Region, and an academic all-region award in the same season. No Moccasin has ever won all three of those awards along with a national academic award in the same season until now.
To be eligible for selection, the student-athlete must be nominated by his or her head coach, have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average, start more than 50 percent of their games, and be an elite player as supported by playing honors or contributions to the success of the team. They must also be a junior or above in athletic standing at their current institution, and in their second year at the current institution if a transfer. A committee then reviews the academic and athletic accomplishments of the nominees before making selections.
