Following its 2-1 overtime win at Lynn on Saturday, the Florida Southern men's soccer team swept the Sunshine State Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week awards with James Meehan bringing home that honor for the offense and Benny Yusufoglu claiming it for the defense. It's the first time in three years the Moccasins won both of the weekly SSC awards.
Meehan, a sophomore forward from London, England, scored the game-winner for the Moccasins 5:17 into overtime, not only giving Florida Southern the win, but its first 5-0 start since the 1997 team opened with eight consecutive wins. It was Meehan's third goal of the season and it came on the Moccasins' only shot of the overtime period. With Lynn ranked No. 15 in the country going into the game, it gave the Mocs their first win over a top-25 opponent since September 14, 2014, when they beat West Florida 3-1 in Pensacola.
The Mocs now have 15 wins all-time against ranked teams, but Saturday's was only the second that occurred in a sudden-death overtime situation. The first came in 2000 when they beat top-ranked Barry 3-2 in Miami Shores.
Yusufoglu was another Moccasin to turn in a stellar performance at Lynn as the sophomore goalkeeper from Dinslaken, Germany made a season-high five saves in the 2-1 win. His final two came in the 74th and 89th minutes following Lynn free kicks in the attacking third, with Yusufoglu making difficult plays to prevent Lynn from scoring. He had two similar saves in the first half to keep the Knights off the scoreboard after Florida Southern had taken an early 1-0 lead. Yusufoglu also extended his scoreless streak to 435:12 before the Knights scored in the second half, which now stands as the third longest in team history.
Saturday night's win marked the seventh time this decade Florida Southern has played either a defending national champion or a defending national runner-up. The Moccasins have now won three of those games, including the last two. Both of those games were again Lynn, which was last year's Division II runner-up. The Moccasins also beat the Knights in 2015 following their national title the previous season.
Prior to this week, the last time Florida Southern swept the two men's soccer player-of-the-week awards was October 12, 2015, when Jonathan Radvogin was the offensive winner and Cole Clingerman was the defensive. It's just the fifth time the Moccasins have accomplished such a sweep.
Florida Southern will play its second straight top-25 team on Wednesday when it hosts Rollins at 7 p.m. The Tars were No. 21 in the most recent national poll.
