MELBOURNE, FL – Following his best performance of the season, Florida Southern freshman Max Coutsolioutsos has been named the Sunshine State Conference Men's Golfer of the Week. The freshman was the individual runner-up at the 2019 Matlock Collegiate Classic with a seven-under-par 209.
Playing in his fifth tournament of the season, Coutsolioutsos opened the Matlock with a six-under-par 66 that gave him the lead and was only one shot off the freshman single-round scoring record at the tournament. He was just the second freshman to shoot a 66 at the Matlock since 2000, and the first to accomplish that in the opening round since 1999 when Alabama's Jan Are Larsen had a 65 in his Matlock debut.
Coutsolioutsos followed his 66 with a 70 in the afternoon, which gave him a share of the lead after round two. Following a 73 in Tuesday's final round, he finished the tournament in second place as the Moccasins' top golfer, which was the highest finish for a freshman at the Matlock since Florida Southern's Greg Koch won it in 2004 with a -5. Only one Florida Southern golfer has ever had a better total score than Coutsolioutsos in the 38-year history of the Matlock, with Jimmy Jones shooting a -9 in 2015.
Aided by a career-high 14 birdies in the tournament and 33 pars, Coutsolioutsos had the first top-five or top-10 finish of his college career. He lowered his season stroke average to 73.60, the best on the team among those who have played in at least three events this season.
