MUSCLE SHOALS, AL – A head-to-head battle between the nation’s No. 1 and No. 2 ranked Division II men’s golf teams may have been a little bit better as a national championship match, but that’s not how the bracket worked out, and the national semifinals were the next best thing. That battle on Thursday afternoon at The Fighting Joe at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail ended up being won by top-ranked West Florida, which came from behind over the final six holes to post a 3½-1½ decision over Florida Southern to advance to Friday's national championship match against 4th-ranked Lynn.

    May 24, 2018
MUSCLE SHOALS, AL – Patience is a word Doug Gordin has used a lot this week, and Thursday’s national quarterfinal match against Lincoln Memorial was the perfect example of what he has been talking about. After some early stumbles, the top-seeded Moccasins took back, piece by piece, almost everything the eighth-seeded Railsplitters had earned. MUSCLE SHOALS, AL – With one round remaining in the stroke play portion of the 2018 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf National Championships, there is a little bit of a gap between the top eight teams in the tournament, and the bottom 12. The top eight, of course, move on to medal play Thursday, and the rest will be sent home. Florida Southern is far enough ahead of the curve (25 shots ahead to be precise) that advancement is a near-certainty, but as head coach Doug Gordin continues to remind his team, there is still the need to improve every day no matter the score.

MUSCLE SHOALS, AL – Florida Southern’s opening round score of -7 was a good start to the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships, though head coach Doug Gordin didn’t call it a great one since another team was still leading. Make no mistake, he’s not playing for second, and it’s that type of perspective that has driven the Moccasins to six previous national titles in his tenure, and has them in position to win another one. Their opening-round score is also a reminder of how good the competition is this year, and it provides a point of emphasis when Gordin talks about what the Moccasins will need to do over the next four days in order for them to repeat as champions.

    May 08, 2018
CONOVER, NC – Just prior to the start of Tuesday morning’s second round of the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional, Florida Southern head coach Doug Gordin stated what he thought the Moccasins needed to do on the front nine of Rock Barn Golf Club in order to make their move. It was more than just a statement, or prediction of what might occur. It seemed more like an emphatic statement from a coach who knew exactly what his team was capable of doing. A minus-three at the turn would put the Mocs in good shape for the rest of the day, and not only did they meet those expectations after nine holes, they continued to exceed them the way all the way through 18, and will head into Wednesday’s final round tied for second place and just two shots from the lead.

What a difference it turned out to be and that difference sent the Moccasins soaring up the standings as the sun got lower.
