LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Southern College men's basketball is slated to play 15 home games in 2019-20 and will face a total of seven teams that advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament a year ago. In addition to an always-grueling Sunshine State Conference schedule, the Moccasins will face five non-conference opponents who qualified for the postseason last year.
"This year's schedule will definitely be the most challenging that we have had since I took over in 2015," said head coach Mike Donnelly. "Not only do we face very tough competition in the Sunshine State Conference, but our non-conference slate will be very difficult as we have scheduled outstanding basketball programs."
The season gets started with a trip to Livingston, Ala. for a pair of games in the annual GSC/SSC Challenge. The Mocs open the season against Delta State (Nov. 9) before capping off the weekend against West Alabama (Nov. 10).
After a trip to USC Aiken (Nov. 16), Southern opens SSC action with a pair of road games at Embry-Riddle (Nov. 20) and Barry (Nov. 23) before hosting New Haven and Valdosta State in the Terrace Hotel Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 29-30.
"With five consecutive away contests to start the season, we will have to make sure we make every day count with our preparation when we begin our workouts in late August. This upcoming year promises to be very exciting and I hope our loyal supporters are looking forward to cheering us on for another winning season of Mocs' basketball."
Sandwiched between SSC home contests against Saint Leo (Dec. 4) and Lynn (Dec. 14) is a non-conference matchup with Lindenwood (Dec. 7). Florida Southern will close out its non-conference slate with games against Northwood (Dec. 20) and American International (Dec. 21) at the Mocs' Christmas Classic.
The remainder of the schedule consists of conference contests, highlighted by home matchups with Nova Southeastern (Jan. 4), Barry (Jan. 25), and Eckerd (Feb. 19) in the regular-season finale.
In all, Florida Southern's 2019-20 opponents combined to go 315-228 a year ago, with seven opponents (Delta State, Lynn, New Haven, Nova Southeastern, USC Aiken, Valdosta State, and West Alabama) advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
The Moccasins' 2019-20 non-conference opponents finished a combined 153-93 a year ago, and Florida Southern will face a total of six teams that won 20 or more games last season.
