MELBOURNE – Junior A.J. Smith has been named the Sunshine State Conference Pitcher-of-the-Week as announced today by the league office. Smith is the third Moccasin to earn the honor this season, joining Logan Browning (Feb. 15) and Ben Richardson (Apr. 11). Browning was also chosen as the SSC Player-of-the-Week on Mar. 28.
Smith, a junior lefthander from Merritt Island, won both of his starts this past week. He struck out 11 and walked three in 12.1 innings of work in the two games while alloeing four runs on 13 hits. Smith finishes the season with a 2-2 record and a 5.36 ERA. He struck out 32 batters in 45.1 innings this season, while walking just seven batters.
In his first start on May 9 in the second game of a doubleheader at Barry, Smith held the Buccaneers to just one run on five hits in the first five innings before giving up a pair of runs in the seventh. The lefty finished with six strikeouts in 6.1 innings as Florida Southern won 6-3 to sweep the conference twin bill.
In his second start in game two on Saturday at home vs. Saint Leo, Smith shutout the Lions for the first five innings before allowing a solo home run in the sixth inning. The 2013 graduate of Melbourne Central Catholic High struck out five in his 6.0 innings of work and left with a 2-0 lead. The last four innings were a bit wild as the two teams combined for 23 runs, but the Mocs never gave up the lead, hanging on for a 15-10 win in what turned out to be the final game of the season.
The Moccasins closed out the 2016 campaign with a 32-7 overall record and a 14-10 mark to finish third in the Sunshine State Conference.
