Florida Southern's Sam Machonis has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Baseball team as announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Machonis is now eligible for Academic All-America honors to be announced later this month.
To be eligible for the Academic All-District Team, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30, be at least a sophomore, and have completed one full academic year at the college or university where they are playing. They must also be a starter or key reserve.
Machonis carries a 3.31 grade point average in his major of marketing and communication. The senior centerfielder leads the Moccasins with a .380 average, nine home runs, and 45 runs batted in. He also leads the squad with 48 runs scored, 111 total bases, a .620 slugging percentage, and 17 stolen bases (in 20 attempts). The 17 steals is third most in the Sunshine State Conference.
His 49 runs scored in seventh best in the Sunshine State Conference while his 68 base hits ranks eighth most as does his 111 total bases. Machonis is also 10th in the SSC with 1.05 RBI per game and 11th with 45 total runs batted in.
Machonis came to Florida Southern after playing two seasons at Polk State College. He graduated from Sickles High School in Tampa in 2012.
Last season, Machonis was named to the All-Sunshine State Conference 2nd-team as well as the SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll.
He has played in 87 games over his two seasons at Florida Southern and sports a career .360 batting average with 101 runs scored, 16 homers, 76 RBI, and a .583 slugging percentage.
Florida Southern is 28-15 overall and 10-8 in the SSC with two series remaining. The Mocs travel to Miami Shores to play Barry on May 8-9 before returning home to Henley Field for a regular-season ending series with Saint Leo May 13-14. Prior to the May 14 1:00 p.m. doubleheader, the Moccasins will honor Machonis and his nine senior teammates.
