LAKELAND – Sam Machonis hit a three-run homer with two outs in the fifth inning to give Florida Southern 8-7 lead as 12th-ranked Florida Southern went on to defeat Eckerd College, 12-8, in a non-conference game Tuesday here at Henley Field.
Florida Southern, which has now won seven straight to improve to 15-6 on the season, jumped on Eckerd starter Jack Silberman for four runs in the first inning. Logan Browning singled to lead off the inning for Florida Southern and scored when Sam Machonis followed with a double. Mitch Reeves then drove in Machonis while, one out later, Dominic Brugnoni hit his third homer of the season for a 4-0 lead.
Eckerd, 8-10, got one run back in the second on a sacrifice fly by Nick Conti; plated a pair of runs in the third on a double by Nick Hill and singles by Luca Loupa and Mitchell Calandar; and added a solo run in the fourth to tie the game at 4.
The Moccasins took the lead back, 5-4, when Jason Sierra was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Tritons grabbed the lead again in the fifth as Loupa homer to lead off the inning off Moccasin starter A.J. Smith. Calandar followed with a single and scored one out later on a sacrifice fly by Conti. A third run, unearned, gave Eckerd a 7-5 advantage.
Again, Florida Soutern answered taking the lead for good in the fifth. Pinch-hitter Ryan Frost singled off Derek Lamensdorf, the fourth Eckerd pitcher of the game, while Evan Barnes followed with a walk. Both runners moved up 90 feet on a sac bunt by Pablo Cabrera. Mike Eagan came on in relief for Eckerd and after striking out the first batter he face, gave up Machonis' three-run blast – his team-leading fifth of the season.
