Mocs Score Two in Tenth For Split of Doubleheader with West Florida

LAKELAND – Jason Sierra and Dominic Brugnoni raced home from second and first, respectively, on a throwing error to lift Florida Southern to a 6-5 win in the bottom of the 10th to earn a split with the University of Florida here Sunday at Henley Field. West Florida won the first game 12-0.

In the nightcap, West Florida (1-2) took a 5-4 lead in the top of the 10th after both teams were deadlock 4-4 at the end of the scheduled seven-inning contest when Jean Figueroa hit a 2-1 pitch over the centerfield fence. It was the third homer of the game and the sixth round-tripper of the doubleheader by the Argonauts.

Sierra then led off the bottom of the 10th inning  with a double to right field for Florida Southern (3-2) while Brugnoni drew a walk to put runners at first and second with no one out. Shawn Sanders then laid down an sacrifice bunt that fielded by Tyler Brown who threw wildly to first, allowing Sierra to score from second and Brugnoni to from first with the winning run.

West Florida jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth on homers by Nic Strasser and Ladeavon Matthews. Florida Southern answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame on a double by Brugnoni and singles from Sanders, David Lugo and Logan Browning. Both teams scored unearned runs in the fifth inning with the Mocs leading 4-3. West Florida tied the game in the top of the seventh, scoring a run on a wild pitch.

Browning worked 4.2 innings in his first start of the season for Florida Southern, allowing just three hits and three runs (two earned) with three strikeouts and no walks. He also was the Mocs' designated hitter, collecting two hits and driving in one run. Brady Arenson got the win with one inning of relief work.

In the opener, a trio of West Florida pitched combined on a 6-hit shutout while Strasser, Matthews, and Figueroa each hit home runs as the Argonauts blanked Florida Southern 12-0. (GAME TWO BOX SCORE)

Florida Southern will host Claflin this Friday and Saturday at Henley Field with a single game at 6 pm and a doubleheader Saturday at 1 pm.
