TAVARAS, FL - Florida Southern College beach volleyball finished the 2019 season with a sixth-place finish at the AVCA Small College Championships at Hickory Point Beach. After a torrential downpour altered the day one schedule the Mocs finished the first day with a victory over Carson-Newman and loss to Lincoln Memorial. Returning to complete the day one schedule the Mocs fell to Spring Hill on Saturday dropping them to 1-2 in the first round of pool play. The second day Florida Southern picked up a victory over Tusculum be before falling to the eventual national runner-up Texas A&M Kingsville. Sitting at 2-3 on the weekend the Mocs were put in the Silver Playoffs where they defeated Lincoln Memorial in the first round and then fell to Saint Leo in the finals.
The Mocs opened tournament play with a 3-0 victory over Carson-Newman. All three sets were won in straight sets as the number five pair of Morgan Cleary and Katie Bergeron picked up the first point for the Mocs. Day one saw a pause in the action during the Mocs match against Lincoln Memorial as the sky opened up and winds averaging 30 mph. After nearly a two and a half hour delay play resumed but the Mocs fell to the Lady Railsplitters, for the first time this season, by a score of 3-2. The two victories for the Mocs came on courts two and four as the pair of Kayla Trefren and Kylee Whiteleather defeated their opponents in straight sets. Haley Goodrich and Celia Greco dropped the first set 21-18 but bounced back to take a 21-18 set two victory before winning the point with a 15-12 set three decision.
Florida Southern's match against Spring Hill scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon was moved to Saturday morning at 9 p.m. The Mocs would fall 3-0 to SHC putting them at 1-2 in pool play. They would be reseeded and put into a pool with Texas A&M-Kingsville and Tusculum where they would finish 1-1 with a 4-1 victory over the Pioneers. The Mocs picked up wins in two sets on all courts but court one.
Sitting at 2-3 on the weekend Florida Southern was advanced to the silver playoff bracket where they were the No. 1 seed. The Mocs were grouped with all familiar foes in No. 2 Stevenson, No. 3 Saint Leo, and No. 4 Lincoln Memorial. The Mocs defeated LMU, 3-2 to advance to the silver playoff finals against Saint Leo. Against LMU, the Mocs picked up a three-set victory on the number two court and two-set victories on the number four and five courts to advance in the silver playoff semifinals. Florida Southern's season ended with 4-1 loss to the Lions as the Mocs lone victory came on the number three courts with Lee Calhoun and Kennedy Mathews picked up the point for FSC.
The University of Tampa won the Gold bracket to win the AVCA National Championship for Division II and III. Saint Leo was crowned the champions for the Silver bracket while Tusculum won the Bronze bracket. Tampa became the first program to win the championship both indoors and beach as the indoor team defeated Western Washington 3-2 for the indoor Spartans third title in program history.
The Mocs finished the programs second season with a final record of 14-16. Fourteen wins this season was a huge improvement to five wins in the programs inaugural season in 2018.
