Florida Southern Earns No. Five Seed at AVCA Small College Championships

LAKELAND, FL - Florida Southern College beach volleyball has earned the number five see at the 2019 AVCA Small College Championship. The three-day tournament will take place at Hickory Point Beach in Tavaras, FL on April 19-21.

The 12 teams will compete in three pools of four teams each. The Mocs land in Pool B with No. 2 Spring Hill and two familiar foes in No. 8 Lincoln Memorial and No. 11 Carson-Newman. Florida Southern is a combined 3-0 on the season vs. the Lady Railsplitters and the Eagles.

Earlier this season at the College of Charleston tournament, the Mocs defeated Carson-Newman 4-1.  All four of the FSC victories came in two sets, while the Mocs lone loss was decided in the third and final set. On the number two court, Kennedy Mathews and Lee Calhoun picked up back-to-back blowout set wins of 21-5 and 21-5.

Florida Southern defeated Lincoln Memorial in back-to-back days with identical 4-1 victories. The first was a home victory, in the midst of a six-match winning streak, that started with the Mocs number five court of Morgan Cleary and Katie Bergeron cruising to a first-set victory of 21-4 and a second-set victory of 21-16 to give the Mocs a 1-0 lead. After falling in the second set the Mocs duo of Haley Goodrich and Celia Greco bounced back to take the final set 15-7 and put the home team up 2-0. The Lady Railsplitters picked up their only victory in a comeback win on the number three court taking the final two sets. The Mocs clinched the match on the number two courts as Kayla Trefren and Kylee Whiteleather won the final two sets. Makena Wilson and Alex Montoya closed out the first match with a victory in the third set to give the Mocs a 4-1 win. The following day the Mocs once again defeated LMU this time in St. Petersburg. Florida Southern cruised out to two-set victories on the number one, four, and five courts before claiming the victory in the second and third sets on the number two court.
