In 1975, Jimmie Sikes wanted a way to honor his father, Leon “Pop” Sikes, an avid scratch golfer, and at the same time, support the Florida Southern College golf program. Thus began the annual “Pop” Sikes Golf Day. Monies raised from the tournament has helped fund scholarships for the men's golf team. Jimmie Sikes founded the Sikes Corporation in 1954 and, along with his father, Leon, Sr. and, brother, Leon, Jr., helped manage three subsidiary Florida Tile plants in Lakeland, Shannon, GA. and Lawrenceburg, KY. A graduate of the University of Florida, Jimmie Sikes passed away in 1982. His wife, Christine, who attended Florida Southern, started a scholarship at FSC, named in honor of her late husband, that assists student-athletes playing on the Moccasin men's golf team.
