LAKELAND - Florida Southern closed out the regular season with a 5-4 loss at home to Rollins on Friday in a Sunshine State Conference match here at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. Four of the six singles matches went to a third set. The 44th-ranked Moccasins drop to 8-10 overall and close out the conference season with a 2-6 record and will compete next in the SSC Tournament at the IMG Academy in Bradenton on April 19-21.
In doubles, Rollins captured two of the three matches with Sami Kirberg and Cody Gubin defeating Blaine Miller and Victor Ahlbeck by an 8-2 score at number three and Nicolo De Fraia and Frederick Danielson edging Derek Bell and Tim Becker, 8-5 at number two. The Moccasins' top duo of Miguel Alvarez-Hevia and Matt Matsuyama beat Guillermo Nicolas and Ziad Melhaoui, 9-7, to hold off a sweep by the Tars.
In singles, Tim Becker got by Atakan Gezer, 6-2, 6-4, at number four to even the match at two-all for the Moccasins. At number one Kirberg, ranked 66th in the NCAA Division II rankings, rallied to defeat No. 72 Alvaro Arias, 0-6, 7-5, 6-2 while Ziad Melhaoui upset 53rd-ranked Ahlbeck, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 at number three to put Rollins ahead 4-2. Nicolas, ranked 56th, then topped Alvarez-Hevia (FSCM), 6-3, 7-6, at number two to clinch the match for the Tars.
Florida Southern grabbed the final two matches as Lennart Vossgaetter downed Gubin, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, at number five and Matsuyama outlasted Danielson, 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 at number six.
