BOCA RATON, FL – The Florida Southern men's tennis team was defeated 8-1 by 3rd-ranked Lynn on the road here Sunday in Sunshine State Conference action at the Perper Tennis Complex. The loss drops the Moccasins to 6-7 overall and 0-2 in the SSC while Lynn improves to 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
In doubles, Blaine Miller and Victor Ahlbeck fell, 8-0, to Jose Porfirio and Kay Bartmann at number two while Miguel Alvarez-Hevia and Matt Matsuyama were topped, 8-3, by Florian Clemares and Tristan Houle at number one. Derek Bell and Tim Becker dropped an 8-3 match to Gabriel Hocevar and Jean-Baptiste Mateo at number three.
In singles, 46th-ranked Alvaro Arias fell, 6-0, 6-4, to No. 8 Mateo at number one singles while Ahlbeck was defeated 6-4, 6-2 by 57th-ranked Houle at number three. Lennart Vossgaetter was then beaten, 6-2, 6-0, by Porfirio at number five before Becker picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Hocevar at number four for Florida Southern's first point of the match.
At number six, Matsuyama battled but was edged, 5-7, 6-4, 10-5 by Renato van Veggel. In the final match, Alvarez-Hevia took a quick 1-0 lead with a 6-2 decision in the first set, but couldn't hold on as 71st-ranked Clemares rallied to win 2-6, 7-6, 10-8.
Florida Southern returns home on Thursday, March 29 against Eckerd College at 3 p.m. at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
