SAINT LEO, FL - The Florida Southern men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision at 7th-ranked Saint Leo Wednesday in Sunshine State Conference action here at the Saint Leo Tennis Center. The Moccasins fall to 0-3 overall and 1-1 in the SSC while Saint Leo improves to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the league.
"The guys are getting better and improving and that's the important thing," said Greg Van Emburgh, who is in his first season as head coach of the Moccasins. "Three of the six singles matches went three sets and we will keep improving."
Tim Becker and Derek Bell posted Florida Southern's lone win with an 8-5 victory over Francisco Aparicio and Bruno Babic at number two doubles. In the other two doubles matches, Thomas Grinberg and Vincent Suillerot topped Miguel Alvarez-Hevia and Matt Matsuyama, 8-2, at number one and Jaime Bueno and James Defusto downed Victor Ahlbeck and Lennart Vossgaetter, 8-5, at number three.
In singles, the Moccasins' Alvaro Arias was defeated, 6-2, 6-3, by Grinberg, the nation's number three ranked singles player at number one. Suillerot, ranked 15th in the NCAA Division II, downed Alvarez-Hevia, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 at number two while Bueno defeated Ahlbeck, ranked 20th in the South Region, 6-0, 6-1, at number three.
At number four singles, Aparicio defeated Becker, 7-6, 6-3, at number three while Babic downed Vossgaetter, 6-7, 6-2, 10-3, at number five. Finally, Defusto won out over Oscar Soderlund, 7-6, 1-6, 10-8, at number six.
Florida Southern will host West Florida at 10 a.m. on Sunday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
