LAKELAND - Third-ranked Saint took a 2-1 lead after doubles and went on to defeat 38th-ranked Florida Southern, 6-3, in Sunshine State Conference men's tennis action here Saturday in the regular season home finale at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The loss drops the Moccasins to 10-8 overall and 3-3 in the SSC while Saint Leo improves to 10-3 and 5-1.
Francisco Aparicio and Oskar Nurmio picked up the Lions' first win with an 8-3 decision over the Moccasins' number two duo of Fabian Lundberg and Brian Slivonik while Jose de Sario and Derek Bell tied the match for the Moccasins with an 8-3 win over Jaime Bueno and Willem Van Den Akker at number three. Saint Leo took the final match as Thomas Grinberg and Vincent Suillerot downed Laurent Mailloux and Miguel Alvarez-Hevia, 8-5, at number one for a 2-1 advantage.
Oscar Soderlund tied the match once again with a 6-3, 6-1 won over Nurmio at number six while 33rd-ranked Bueno upended Slivonik, 6-2, 6-2. Aparacio then picked up a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win over Mailloux at number four singles while 14th-ranked Grinberg downed Lundberg, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at number one. Suillerot, ranked 45th in the country, then beat de Sario, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at numbwr two while Alvarez-Hevia got the Moccasins final win at number five with a 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory over Charles Benet.
Florida Southern closes out the regular season with a pair of road matches, taking on Embry-Riddle on April 11 and Rollins on April 15.
