Mocs Drop 5-2 Match to Rollins in SSC Tournament Quarterfinals

TAMPA – Fourth-seeded Florida Southern was tripped up by No. 5 seed Rollins, 5-2, in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Sunshine State Conference Men's Tennis Tournament here Thursday at the Hillsborough Community College Tennis Complex. Rollins advances to play top-seeded Saint Leo in the semifinals Friday at 2 pm.

Florida Southern, now 14-10 on the season, awaits word of a possible berth in the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament. The 48-team postseason field will be announced on NCAA.com on May 3. The Moccasins were ranked seventh in the latest NCAA regional rankings that are used to determine postseason bids. Eight teams from the South Region will be selected.

The Moccasins fell behind, 3-0, to Rollins after the Tars swept the doubles competition. Anton Bettink and Casey Austgen posted the Tars first win with a 8-6 triumph over FSC's Jose de Sario and Brian Slivonik at number one doubles.

Fabian Lundberg and Arthur Viallaneix then fell, 8-6, to the Rollins' duo of Patrick Sell and Ziad Melhaoui at number three, while Robin Machione and Adrian Di Felice completed the sweep with m 8-6 victory at number one doubles over Miguel Alvarez-Hevia and Laurent Mailloux. Mailloux was playing in his first match since being sidelined since March 15 due to an injury.

The Moccasins' first point came in number three singles as Brian Slivonik posted a 6-0, 6-0, win over Sell in the first singles match to finish. Rollins got the point back at number one singles as Bettink bested Lundberg, 6-1, 6-2 to put the Tars with one of match point.

De Sario kept Florida Southern in the match as he recorded a 7-5, 6-0 victory at number two singles over Austgen to make the score 4-2 in favor of Rollins. Di Felice then clinched the win for Rollins with a 6-1, 7-5, win over Viallaneix.

In tournament play, once a team has won five matches, any singles competitions still in play are halted and left unfinished.
