LAKELAND – Florida Southern made its first match as the nation's 43rd-ranked team a winning one, topping Augustana (S.D.), 7-2, here Wednesday at the Warden Tennis Center. The Moccasins, who debuted at No. 43 in the Oracle/ITA Division II Men's Collegiate Tennis National Ranking released this afternoon, improve to 11-5 on the season.
Florida Southern made quick work of Augustana in doubles as the number three team of Fabian Lundberg and Arthur Viallaneix took just 27 minutes to post a 8-0 victory over Austin Nolder and Brock Baade and the Mocs' number two duo of Miguel Alvarez-Hevia and Oscar Soderlund took 34 minutes to beat Joe Sawatzke and Reed Ritterbusch, 8-1, at number two. Jose deSario and Brian Slivonik posted a 8-3 victory at number one over Jared Hofer and Zachary Adkins.
"Doubles was clinical," said FSC Coach Trey Heath.
In singles, Soderlund posted a quick 6-0, 6-2 win over Ritterbusch at number four while Alvarez-Hevia beat Sawatzke, 6-0, 6-0 at number three to clinch the win for the Moccasins.
Matt Matsuyama played at number five for Florida Southern and posted a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Andrew Johnson while Lundberg played a tough match at number one, prevailing in a super tiebreaker, 6-2, 2-6, 10-7. The win was Lundberg's eighth in his last nine matches.
Augustana's two points in the match came at number two as Adkins topped Slivonik, 7-5, 6-4 and at number six as Mark DeSpiegler downed Brian Wilson in a tough three-setter, winning 3-6, 7-5, 10-4. It was Wilson's first singles match as a collegiate player.
Florida Southern's next match will over a week from today as the Moccasins will travel to Miami Shores on Friday, April 1 to face No. 7 Barry University in a Sunshine State Conference showdown.
