Southern Wins Second 8-1 Match of the Day, 117 Miles From First Victory

MELBOURNE – Florida Southern capped a hectic day of tennis with an 8-1 win over Bloomsburg in a match played here Tuesday evening. The day started for the Moccasins with an 8-1 defeat of Walsh in a matched played in the morning back in Lakeland.

Florida Southern improves to 7-3 on the season with its third straight win and its seventh win in its last eight matches. Bloomsburg falls to 2-3.

The Moccasins swept all three doubles matches and the number one through five singles matches. The match got underway with a 8-1 win by Miguel Alvarez-Hevia and Arthur Viallaneix at number two doubles over Bloomsburg's Gerard Puig and Nenyi Micah while Jose de Sario and Brian Slivonik combined to pick up an 8-0 win over Pablo Herrero and Dhir Gala at number one doubles. Fabian Lundberg and Oscar Soderlund rounded out the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win at number three doubles over Steve Williams and Scott Langenbach.

Slivonik picked up Florida Southern's first singles win at number four downing Pedro Andari by a 6-0, 6-1 win while Alvarez-Hevia locked up the match win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at number three singles over Micah. Viallaneix followed with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at number five singles and de Sario posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Puig at number two. Lundberg took the Moccasin last five at number one singles by a 6-4, 6-4 score versus Herrero.

The final match of the day pitted the Moccasins Lance Francisco, seeing his first action of the Spring, up against Bloomsburg's Gilbert Machado. Each player took a 6-3 with Machado scoring first and Francisco evening the score in the second set. In the end, Machado prevailed 14-12 in a super tiebreaker for the Huskie's only point of the match.

Florida Southern returns to Lakeland to face Bluefield State on Sunday at 2 pm at the Warden Tennis Center on the FSC campus.
