Four Singles and Three Doubles Teams Advance in Grizzly Open

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Singles players Blaine Miller, Jose de Sario, Oscar Söderlund, and Arthur Viallaneix all won two matches in the first round of the Grizzly Open played here on the campus of Georgia Gwinnett College. All four move on in the winners' bracket. Also, three Moccasin doubles teams advance.

In Draw A of the Open Singles Competition, Miguel Alvarez-Hevia received a first-round bye, but fell 3-6, 6-1, 1-0(6) to Anatoliy Lashkul of Cumberland in the second round. Alvarez-Hevia moves into the third round of the consolation bracket against a to-be-determined opponent at a to-be-announced time.

Fabian Lundberg was defeated 7-6(4), 1-6, 1-0(5) by Rafa Hewett Steiger of Point University and now moves into the third round of the consolation bracket against Hunter Lathrop at a to-be-announced time.

Laurent Mailloux defeated Roberto Bazzarella of Emory, 6-3, 6-7(5), 1-0(5), but dropped his second match, 7-5, 6-3, to Gilad Berman of host Georgia Gwinnett.

In Draw B, Miller won two matches, defeating Jarred Thompson of Alabama State, 7-6(4), 4-6, 1-0(6) and then downing Alonso Trevizo of Point University, 6-1, 6-4. Miller will face Clement Raymond of USC-Aiken in the Round of 16 Saturday at 10:30 am.

Also in Draw B, de Sario advanced to the Round of 16, by defeating Filip Seatovic of Middle Georgia, 6-2, 6-2, after receiving a first round bye. De Sario will face Louis Malejka of Emmanuel Saturday at 10:30 am.

Söderlund is another Moc heading to the Round of 16 after posting two wins. In his opening match, he beat Digvijay Naruka of Alabama State, 6-3, 6-2 and then disposed of Andrew Lo of Emory by a 6-1, 7-5 score. Söderlund will play Saturday 10:30 am against Tiago Lopes of Cumberland.

Yet another Moc advancing to the Round of 16 is Viallaneix who posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Dylan Nelson of Cumberland before dispatching March Zheng of Emory, 6-1, 6-0. Viallaneix will play Calle Knutsson of USC-Aiken Saturday at 11 am. 

Mark Buckman was defeated, 6-1, 6-1, by Colby Gandy of Middle Georgia and will now face Jaime Gusano of USC-Aiken Saturday at 8:30 am in the second round of consolation matches. 

Brian Wilson lost his first-round match, 6-0, 6-2, to Szabin Pusztay of Alabama State and moves on to play Dylan Jones of Middle Georgia Saturday at 8:30 am in the second round of the consolation matches.

Derek Bell fell 6-4, 6-2 to Alvaro Conesa of Middle Georgia and will now play Fernando Arroyo of Palm Beach Atlantic Saturday at 8:30 am in the second round of the consolation matches.

In the Open Doubles, the Florida Southern team of Alvarez-Hevia and Lundberg received a first-round bye and will play their first match Saturday at 8:30 am against the unattached duo of Andrei Andrukhou and Jack MacFarlane. Also receiving an opening round bye was the team of Miller and Buckman who will open play Saturday at 9:30 am against Alabama State's Takura Miambo and Karlo Skvorc.

Also in Doubles, Mailloux and Viallaneix defeated Raymond and Mathias Degardin of USC-Aiken, 8-6 to advance to Saturday's play at 8:30 am against Georgia State's Christian Gochnauer and P.H. Broyhill, playing unattached. Bell and Wilson lost to Bazzarella and Andrew Harrington of Emory, 8-4.

The result of the doubles match involving the pairing of de Sario and Söderlund was not available.
